Our story
A landmark with a living history.
The Granville occupies a handsome Grade II listed Georgian building on Wellesbourne Road. It began as a private residence around the start of the 19th century and has served generations of village life.
Grade II listed · List entry 1364915. Officially recognised on 23 January 1987 for its special architectural and historic interest.
A Georgian home
The three-bay house, sash windows and formal doorway point to a substantial private residence.
A village pub
The traditional date for licensed premises, with a late-Victorian extension added around the same period.
The Granville name
Local history links the name to Reverend Edward Granville, Vicar of neighbouring Wasperton.

Built on Barford's southern approach
The original frontage was not designed as an inn. Historic England dates it to circa early C19. The first owner and original house name remain unknown.
Nearby homes doubled as workplaces for trades such as tailoring and joinery, placing the future pub within a living, working village.
From house to public house
“Established 1886” is the most credible traditional date for the building becoming licensed premises. The Granville name may have followed later: Reverend Edward Granville did not become Vicar of Wasperton until 1900.
A brewery pub
The Granville later appeared among the public houses associated with Flower & Sons, the important Stratford-upon-Avon brewery.
Memories made here
One resident remembered buying lemonade through a small outside hatch—then returning on their eighteenth birthday for a first legal pint. The Back Room, later the Barford Barn, hosted parties, performances and village events.
In 2024, more than 1,000 people reportedly signed a petition amid concern for the pub's future: a measure of how strongly Barford sees The Granville as a community asset.
What remains to discover
The exact identity of the original house and its occupants before 1886 remains open. Records at Warwickshire County Record Office may one day complete that chapter.
